Bomanite Best Microtop Project Silver Award winner 2006
Vancouver Sky Loft project

As architects and designers experiment with new styles and building methods, taller and more innovative structures are springing up all around the world; designs that increasingly employ concrete for more than its structural durability. Fast becoming a “made to be seen” medium with its versatile decorative palette in tow, concrete has found its way indoors and is now being used for everything from designer flooring and accent walls to custom countertops and basins. With its cost effectiveness and flexibility, concrete is thriving at the forefront of the building design industry; an industry where Bomanite concrete systems are leading the way in quality and bringing inventive style to both interior and exterior surfaces.

In pursuit of finding the appropriate finish to complement the overall style of the impressive “Sky Loft” project located in downtown Vancouver, BC, the interior design team from Incline Design contacted various concrete flooring firms in hopes of finding an acceptable flooring design for the new construction building. For over a year, their pursuit was unsuccessful. With a deadline looming and pressure mounting to make a decision, the design team finally found the answer—Bomanite Franchise Partner Danamac Concrete Systems. “Within 48 hours, ten samples were provided…a presentation was made to clients and immediately a decision was made that very day. Implementation (of the project) went ahead as scheduled,” says Caroline Di Diego of Incline Design. With innovative ideas, exceptional products and craftsmen, Danamac Concrete Systems embarked on the 2200 sq. ft. interior Sky Loft endeavor.

Thirty-eight stories up, surrounded by all-glass walls and windows, Danamac’s team braved the extremely hot conditions day in and out for over three weeks to complete the stellar Micro-Top project. After the initial grinding prep of the post tension slab was complete and an epoxy bonding agent was applied, over 600 bags of repair mortar was used to level out the floor that was over 1 ½” in some areas. Another epoxy bonding agent was added and then Bomanite Micro-Top, in the selected custom Brazilian Slate color, was then applied to the surface. “Even though we were in extremely hot conditions, we had no problems with the Micro-Top setting up too quickly,” says Dan MacLeod, owner of Danamac Concrete Systems. The project continued on schedule. To bring a decorative element to the finish, rather then adding the saw cuts at the end of the project and using them solely for controlling cracks, saw cuts were placed at each coating level. At the request of the design team, a specific pattern was chosen and the saw cuts were carried through to the final finishing stages. Lastly, with a 100% solids epoxy sealer and two coats of urethane, the floor for the Sky Loft was complete. Bringing panache and sophistication to the overall design of the building, Danamac’s skillful installation proved successful to the designer’s delight.
